Potential Rugby World Cup role for Wanganui - 1/09/2006Wanganui's possible involvement in the 2011 Rugby World Cup will be considered by the Wanganui District Council's Sport and Activity Committee next week.
There was potential for Wanganui to play a role during the event, committee chair Cr Philippa Baker-Hogan said.
"Haig Elgar, of the Wanganui Rugby Football Union, will make a presentation to the committee about ways Wanganui could be involved in the Rugby World Cup," Cr Baker-Hogan said.
"There could be the possibility of Wanganui hosting teams and providing training facilities – Mr Elgar will talk to us about options and how the Council could support any proposal for involvement."
During the Rugby World Cup, 48 games will be played over six weeks. It is anticipated that the event will attract about 60,000 international visitors, spread throughout New Zealand, plus 3.4 billion television viewers.
