Second look at tree thinning issue - 3/12/2006

Mayor Michael Laws has ordered a halt to the felling of five plane trees in Victoria Avenue.

"Over the weekend, new information was received that suggests there was an alternative for the working party. It appears that some advice was not received with the changeover of council officers, and thus not considered."

Mr Laws said that Monday's council meeting motion on the issue "simply endorsed the working party decision. Some trees do represent a hindrance to public safety and drainage in the area – of that there is no question".

"My advice is that two of the trees must definitely go – one is unhealthy and another severely compromises drainage in the area. But the other three could stay with some judicious pruning. That would preserve the streetscape in the area.

"In the meantime, I've ensured that no removals will take place until council revisits the issue – probably on 18 December."
